| 15:30-16:15 | Professor G. Grubb, Copenhagen. Title: On the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problem Abstract: In 1975, Atiyah, Patodi and Singer initiated the study of the index of spectral boundary problems (defined by pseudodifferential projections) for first-order elliptic differential operators of Dirac type on compact manifolds with boundary, introducing in particular a nonlocal invariant known as the eta invariant. This has led to a wealth of further studies and extensions. We shall try to give an overview of some of the recent progress, mainly from an analysis point of view. |
| 16:15-17:00 | Professor B. Ørsted, University of Aarhus. Title: Geometry of the Maslov index Abstract: The Maslov index plays a key role in connection with the geometric asymptotics of solutions to partial differential equations. It also appears naturally in the representation theory of the symplectic group, and in gluing formulas for certain elliptic boundary value problems. In this lecture we shall give some new properties of the Maslov index, and at the same time generalize it, in both finite and infinite dimension; in particular we relate it to the theory of bounded cohomology of groups. |
